Jacket Sleeve Shortening at DMY Tailoring: More Complex Than You Might Think

Jacket sleeve shortening is an almost everyday task in the life of the Budapest-based Dress ME and YOU tailoring house. We spoke with the owner, Géza Béres.

When does suit sleeve shortening or jacket sleeve shortening come into question?

We encounter several different situations in our tailoring shop. There are more complex cases where not only the jacket sleeve needs to be shortened, but the garment also needs to be taken in. In such cases, the result is a fully customized jacket. These are the more complex jobs, where the garment stays with us for a longer period of time.
We also frequently receive simpler requests, where the jacket only spends a few days with us, and during that time we bring out the very best of it.
Not every case is complex. The “simpler case” is when only the jacket sleeve needs to be shortened. The quotation marks are justified, because a professional jacket sleeve shortening is not done the way most people initially imagine. Many are surprised when I explain how a proper jacket sleeve shortening is actually carried out in our workshop.

How is a professional jacket sleeve shortening carried out?

One might think that the bottom of the sleeve simply needs to be folded up and stitched — and that’s it. This may be how some less professional alteration shops work — but not us. Such a solution is unacceptable in our workshop. We are accustomed to clients approaching us with suit sleeve shortening requests. Naturally, we understand that when someone asks for suit sleeve shortening, the actual task involves the jacket sleeve. A suit consists of a jacket and trousers, but we do not argue over such details with our clients — in fact, we do not argue with clients at all. Arguments are more typical in mass-production alteration shops, where explanations are often needed as to why the result did not meet expectations. This is not how we operate. We are a traditional men’s tailoring house, not a simple alteration shop. We dismantle the jacket from the shoulder, adjust the sleeve length, and then reassemble it professionally.
We are able to perform this complex work at a high level because true professionals work with us, many of whom have 10, 20, or even 30 years of professional experience.
This is how we can guarantee that clients can safely entrust their valued suits and jackets to us. We have worked on inexpensive ready-to-wear suits as well — but that is not typical. Our clients often entrust us with jackets whose value could rival that of a car. They come to us because they know that every piece is handled by expert hands.

Jacket sleeve shortening – we sometimes encounter interesting solutions…

Why don’t all alteration shops work professionally?

Unfortunately, many alteration businesses choose the quick solution: they fold the jacket sleeve from the bottom and finish the job. Why do they do this? There are several reasons. Some are simply unaware of how unprofessional this method is. Others are in a hurry and do not want to spend time on such work — they just want to get it done. Mass-production alteration shops can only handle high volume by cutting corners. This quick solution is problematic in several ways. It goes against professional standards and can ruin the garment in moments. The buttonholes will reveal unsightly traces of alteration — a mistake no self-respecting men’s tailor would ever allow.

Where can things go wrong?

Many of our clients tell us that before finding Dress ME and YOU Tailoring, they took their jackets to other mass-production alteration shops. They often did not dare leave the jacket there because they saw that proper craftsmanship was not a priority — only speed. Clients who invest in high-quality jackets know that sleeves must never be shortened from the bottom. Many come to us specifically because they do not trust mass-production shops with valuable garments. Instead of gratitude, I feel frustration toward those who would ruin a quality jacket with such careless work.

Can it be done quickly?

A true men’s tailor does not think this way. Time does not tick like a conveyor belt in our workshop. Made-to-measure tailoring is not mass production. At Dress ME and YOU, choosing the quick solution is never an option. We deliver only professional craftsmanship — nothing else is acceptable. Our clients appreciate that our focus is on quality, not speed.

Are there cases when jacket sleeve shortening is not possible?

There has never been a case where we could not help solve a client’s problem. Challenging and unusual cases, however, are not uncommon. One such challenge involved customizing a jacket for a client with very unique physical attributes. A bodybuilder client presented a particularly difficult case. Due to his biceps size, lifting the sleeve from the shoulder was not possible. The solution was to completely redesign the sleeve, resulting in a fully custom jacket. After being turned away elsewhere, the client was delighted to find that his jacket fit as if it had been poured onto him.

How complex is a professional jacket sleeve shortening?

Every jacket receives the proper level of professional care. We dismantle the jacket from the shoulder and take the time required to ensure the armhole remains perfectly balanced. We are satisfied only when the client cannot tell that the jacket was taken apart and reassembled.
If you want your jacket handled safely and professionally, feel free to entrust us with this work.
We work precisely and with care. There is no mass production here — only meticulous, handcrafted tailoring.

Can the sleeve be lengthened again later?

Suit sleeve shortening should always be considered carefully. Once professionally shortened as described above, only minimal lengthening is possible.

How much does jacket sleeve shortening cost?

At Dress ME and YOU Tailoring, professional jacket sleeve shortening costs 12,990 HUF. This is a fair price considering the complexity of the work.

How long does jacket sleeve shortening take?

We never release a garment until we are fully satisfied with the result. Our workshop is a traditional, hand-crafted men’s tailoring atelier.
Due to the complexity of jacket sleeve shortening, the typical turnaround time is approximately one week.
